On March 31, 2014, the Working Group II of IPCC will publish its report, which is focused on impacts of and vulnerability to climate change, as well as adaptation to new climatic conditions. This seminar is arranged to follow up on the results of the report and to discuss opportunities and threats of climate change in relation to Swedish agriculture and forestry. The seminar highlights two parts of the report – the chapter on food production systems and food security as well as the regional chapter for Europe. Leading scientists from the working group will present and discuss the work and the results. The complete 5th Assessment Report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), based on reports from all three working groups, will be presented in October 2014.
A changing climate will influence the competitive landscape for the Swedish, European and global green sectors. It is necessary to consider different development trends for Swedish agriculture and forestry in a European and global context and how Swedish land resources shall best be utilized as a motor in further developing a green economy. Although there is no specific IPCC chapter on forestry, this sector will also be considered in view of its importance for the Swedish economy as well as its potential competition with agriculture for available land.
The seminar is arranged by the Academy Committee on a Green Economy (2013–2015) in collaboration with the FACCE-JPI (The Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change). The purpose of the committee is to highlight the strategic and positive roles of agriculture and forestry in the development of a green and competitive Swedish economy.
