Decoding the Social Aspects of Forest Debate

Globally, the ‘social’ aspects of forests and forestry has always been regarded as a secondary significance and sometimes blamed as a roadblock to forest management. The Increasingly polarised world is now more than just a debate between private sectors’ climate-related timber/ forest conservation business and social science’s community-led forest conservation. What is overlooked in this debate is the impact on people. Missing out on social perspective also means missing out on sustainable solutions. This lecture aims to direct these debates towards finding a way forward from using the ‘people’ lens.

Dr. Purabi Bose has her interest to create a dialogue where the ‘people’ are acknowledged, and actively engaged in decision making of the private sectors in protecting forest. Her presentation highlights acknowledging traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples and local communities as deeply rooted to their cultural and emotional connections – as a way of living – with the forest, wildlife and land. She has been studying and conducting empirical research on Indigenous Peoples and forest land governance in Latin America, South and South East Asia and East Africa and most recently in Sweden. In addition, Bose’s lecture is an open invitation to authors to write a chapter for a collaborative forthcoming edited volume on this topic.
