Sjöstugan croft is situated on high ground between a hollow and the strait beside Risön. The large field to the south was once a meadow belonging to Barksätter, before it was turned into arable land in the late 19th century.
The croft, built c. 1700 as a dwelling for Barksätter’s fishers, was originally called Fisketorp but soon acquired the name Sjöstugan. Many estate crofts were sold in the early 20th century. Sjöstugan was sold in 1929 but was recently reacquired by the Academy.
An 1840s map shows the croft’s dwelling house, an outbuilding and a small plot of arable land. Today’sbuilding, which dates from 1893, is a well-preserved, corner-jointed structure with roughcast walls. There is also a wooden pig shed and some later outbuildings. The barn burned down in the 1950s. Sjöstugan is surrounded by open land that is still used for mowing.
