Trä som byggnadsmaterial fått hjälp på vägen av att miljöfrågorna getts hög prioritet. Träanvändning är av stor betydelse för Sverige, inte minst i regioner som har många problem i övrigt. I direktiven konstateras också att det finns gott om skog som kan användas, även om vi samtidigt måste spara värdefulla naturmiljöer.
