In his lunch talk Professor Taalas will give an overview of the current and future status of climate, its impacts and perspectives of climate mitigation.
He will also describe the greenhouse gas budgets of CO2, CH4 and N2O and the role of forests and agriculture. FMI has carried out new research to better understand the greenhouse gas budgets of farmlands and forests, areas where uncertainties have been high.
Prof. Petteri Taalas is the Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, a government research and service agency. He has served as the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, professor and scientist. FMI has about 400 scientists working in its research branch containing climate, space/satellite and meteorological/marine research. FMI hosts European ICOS-greenhouse gas monitoring network headquarters and coordinates EUMETSAT greenhouse gas and air quality activities.
