Forests and Forestry in Sweden 2024

Sweden is a country dominated by forests, which cover around 70 percent of the land area. The forests and forestry are shaped by the country’s natural conditions, its history, its forestry policy and environmental legislation, research, the knowledge and experience of the many forest owners, and a tradition of seeking solutions based on mutual respect, understanding and compromise.

The forest is crucial for Sweden through its important role in the economy and in rural development. Sweden is a relatively small country but is one of the leading exporters of wood products in the world.

This booklet aims at providing an insight into Swedish forestry practice, as well as some of the trade-offs between forestry and other ecosystem services and biodiversity, to give an overview of the values and goals that shape Swedish forestry today. The booklet is targeted towards an international audience curious to learn more about Swedish forests and forestry. It describes what is being done today, along with some history and challenges and opportunities for the future. It is far from an extensive in-depth analysis but hopefully it will provide a glimpse into why the forest means so much to Swedish people.
